Hopes and Fears: Mass Effect 3 and Assassin’s Creed 3

There’s been a lot of talk recently about two of the biggest games of this year: Mass Effect 3 and Assassin’s Creed 3, and, since I feel pretty attached to both franchises, I figure I’d throw in my thoughts too. (Note that I could have included Halo 4 as well, but while I was very attached to it in the Halo 2 and 3 days, as Bungie has distanced themselves from the franchise, I’ve found my interest waning as well.) Assassin’s Creed: Revelations: Multiplayer

We close our discussion of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations with talking about its multiplayer component. I complained quite a bit about the uninspired single-player content of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, both the gameplay and the story. While I enjoyed the experience overall, I was a little bored by it at the same time. The multiplayer, on the other hand, while it hasn’t changed a whole lot since Brotherhood, is consistently tense and interesting, and there still isn’t much else out there like it. Continue reading

Assassin’s Creed: Revelations: Story & Peripheral Gameplay

While I complained a lot about the core gameplay last time, playing around in Constantinople in Assassin’s Creed: Revelations was still generally a pleasant experience. Narratively, though, it was even more of a let-down. It decided to tell three stories, rather than the usual two in an Assassin’s Creed game, but it didn’t really tell any of them very well, and, worse, it didn’t seem like these were stories worth telling in the first place. Assassin’s Creed: Revelations: Gameplay

It’s Assassin’s Creed week here on the blog. This is a series I’ve loved since the start, and Revelations is a game with a lot of content, so I want to give it the space it deserves. Today I’m going to focus on the core gameplay, next time I’ll talk about the story and some of the peripheral gameplay, and then I’ll close with a discussion of the multiplayer. Continue reading
